Copy/rsync to/from Mox w/o password

The tips below require the use off SSH keys between Mox and your computer/NAS of choice.

Pro-tip from UW IT:

To avoid having to enter UW NetID password every time one wants to copy to/from Mox, always initiate transfers from Mox.

For recurring copying (i.e. rsync), set up cron job on Mox to run rsync to desired computer/NAS.

  To set this up, you can do the following:
  
  1.Create a text file – name it whatever you’d like.
  
  2.Fill in text file with cron formatting to specify command execution rate(s). Here’s an example of the contents of my testing file:
  
  cat cron.txt */1 * * * * echo "is this working?" >> crontesting.txt
  
  The file above contains a single line that will run the echo command every minute. You can have multiple cron jobs in a single file – each job needs to be on its own line. You’ll need to Google on how to specify execution rates. Basically, each asterisk above represents:
  
  minute(s) hour(s) day(s)_of_month month(s) day(s)_of_week
  
  The command above uses special notation (the */1) to execute at a regular interval, instead of at a certain time of day.
  
  3.Run the following command to load your cron job(s):
  
  crontab filename_from_step_1

  An alternative to using cron would be to run a variation of this script:

#!/bin/bash
# File monitoring script.
# Place script in folder you want to monitor.
# Set sleep time to desired monitor interval (in seconds).
# Modify find command to perform desired action upon finding new files

while true
do
    touch ./lastwatch
    sleep 20
    find . -cnewer ./lastwatch | while read file; do echo $file; done
done
```
  The script repeatedly updates the time stamp of the file called “lastwatch” and then looks for any files with a time stamp that are newer (via the find -cnewer command). In the example above, the script just echoes the name(s) of any files discovered by the find command.
